The history of the city of Thessaloniki is long, dating back to the ancient Greeks. Today, with the opening of borders in Southeastern Europe, after the collapse of communism in the early 1990s, it is experiencing a strong recovery, which serves as the first port for the northern Greek regions of Macedonia and Thrace, as well as for the whole of Southeastern Europe.

Mount Athos

The city of Mount Athos is located throughout the third, easternmost and most enchanting peninsula of Halkidiki, the peninsula of Mount Athos. It is the only place in Greece that is entirely dedicated to the prayer and worship of God. For this reason it is called Mount Athos. The dominant Mount Athos is a huge cone with a height of 2,033 meters. It is a bare, treeless hill that seems to open up to the sky and its slopes are overgrown with age-old trees. All this helps to create an area of unparalleled natural beauty.

Bergina

The city of Aigai, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia, was discovered in the 19th century near Vergina, in northern Greece. The most important finds are the monumental palace, richly decorated with mosaics and painted plaster, and the cemetery with more than 300 tombs, some of which date from the 11th century BC. One of the royal tombs of Megali Toumba is identified with that of Philip II, who conquered all Greek cities, paving the way for his son Alexander the Great and the expansion of the Hellenistic world.

Meteora

Meteora is a unique natural monument with special beauty. The rocks that spread in the valley give the impression of huge, dark stalagmites. The monasteries built on the rocks during the 12th and 13th centuries by the monks are of special architectural importance and create a mystical atmosphere. The excursion includes a visit to two of the monasteries as well as the regional union of Byzantine icons and a passage through the valley of Tempi.

Kastoria

Kastoria is an important religious center for the Greek Orthodox Church and is the seat of the metropolitan. It originally had 72 Byzantine and medieval churches, of which 54 have survived, such as the church of Agios Athanasios of Mouzakis. Some of them have been restored and give us useful information about the trends of architecture and fresco painting of the late Byzantine era. The Museum of Byzantine History is located in Dexamenis Square with houses as examples of Byzantine iconography. The Folklore Museum and the Museum of Monuments are also located in the town. Kastoria is full of old mansions dating back to the Turkish occupation, while parts of the old Byzantine walls still exist.
